Drawing on input from the Mayor's Task Force on Community Housing, the City of Toronto will be holding a series of public consultations to inform the future of the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC). Taking place throughout the month of April, eight public meetings will give Torontonians the chance to share their input regarding Toronto's affordable housing crisis.

Facing a capital repair backlog of $2 billion and a projected operating deficit of over $60 million, TCHC's budget shortfall has been made all the more urgent by the swelling social housing waitlist, which is leaving a record number of economically vulnerable Torontonians without affordable homes. In response to the housing crisis, the Task Force's January report, 'Transformative Change for TCHC,' recommended an overhaul of the housing corporation's structure.

In place of TCHC's centralized oversight and management of properties, the task force—chaired by former Mayor Art Eggleton—proposes spreading out the corporation's services across a network of not-for-profit organizations, with the goal of streamlining housing services into a more community based model. The public consultations will give Torontonians a chance to learn more about the proposed changes and share their thoughts. Ahead of the meetings, a more detailed look at the recommendations is provided in our previous editorial, linked here.
