The seedy motel strip on the Etobicoke waterfront is now a distant memory, as new condominium towers continue to transform the Humber Bay Shores community which has replaced it. The 49-storey Lago at the Waterfront and 14-storey Riva del Lago by Monarch Group/Mattamy Homes and the Biddington Group are amongst the many new developments taking shape in the neighbourhood. The sister developments will together will add over 800 new homes to the Humber Bay Shores area.
The side-by-side Graziani + Corazza Architects-designed developments have both grown noticeably since our last update on their progress in November. Lago at the Waterfront has grown from 29 to 35 floors, an increase of six levels in just under four weeks ago. This rapid progress is thanks in part to the unseasonably mild weather Toronto has been experiencing of late.
As the tower grows taller into the neighbourhood skyline, its distinctive design feature—shifting four-level sections of floor plates which are alternately underpainted black or white—is becoming more apparent to passersby, especially when viewed from below the building.
In the coming months, we can expect to see Lago at the Waterfront become the tallest building on Etobicoke's waterfront. In a couple year's time, it too will be eclipsed by Empire Communities' Eau du Soleil condos, now in its excavation stages nearby to the southwest.
Next door though at the site of Riva del Lago, the remaining podium levels are in the process of being poured in advance of the first of the tower floors above. The repetitive nature of forming the tower floors will allow construction workers to reuse the same forms from one floor to the next, meaning work should progress at a much swifter rate than the unique podium levels currently taking shape.
