It has been a long time coming, but Diamante Development is now ready to launch the marketing for The Diamond Condominiums on Yonge, a 30 storey tower to rise on a block shared with St. George's Church on Churchill Avenue in the North York City Centre area.

It was 8 years ago when a 25-storey, 224-unit residential tower was approved for the west half of the block, at the same time that a complete rebuild of St. George's Church was planned for the east side. While the church has since been completed, the proposal for the residential tower—actually addressed on Canterbury Place, a quiet street immediately west of Yonge—has continued to evolve over the years.

In 2011, the Committee of Adjustment approved a 1 storey height increase, with the addition of 59 units, while a 2012 resubmission to the City of Toronto's Planning Department proposed another increase, from 26 storeys up to 31 storeys, as well as increasing the number of units from 283 to 346. Most recently, Diamante further revised the submission, down to 30-storeys but increasing the floor-to-ceiling heights, adding five metres to take the building to 92 metres tall. Approval for the development, designed by Scott Shields Architects, is expected at City Council in January once public benefits are agreed to with the City.

The site on the north side of Churchill Avenue is a few blocks south of Finch Avenue. While lower-density properties currently exist a block or two away, 18-storey residential towers with townhomes are some of the recently built neighbours in this rapidly redeveloping North York City Centre area.

Renderings of the development show a rectilinear design with a prominent volume on the southwest corner, and a step-back on the Yonge Street side at the 25th floor. The tower is clad in contrasting dark glazing with white accents, those presumably done in precast concrete.

We will keep an eye out for additional details as new information about the project continues to emerge. In the meantime, additional information and renderings can be found in the project's dataBase file, linked below. Want to get involved in the discussion?
