The Humber Bay Shores area of South Etobicoke was little more than a strip of seedy motels up to a dozen or so years ago, until a wave of redevelopment arrived, gradually rebuilding the waterfront district into one of the Greater Toronto Area's most impressive skylines. Today, all the motels have been replaced by new condominium projects, and more continue to add new life and character to this up-and-coming part of the city.

Now rising on the large block bounded by Lake Shore Boulevard to the northwest and Marine Parade Drive to the southeast, construction is well under way on both the 49-storey Lago at the Waterfront and smaller sibling Riva del Lago which is soon to reach grade. Work on the development's continuous below-grade garage structure is now wrapping up in advance of Riva del Lago's 14-storey ascent into the air.

Developed by the Monarch Group, now being folded into Mattamy Homes, the two Graziani + Corazza Architects-designed buildings will add hundreds of new residents to the fast growing waterfront community. Lago at the Waterfront now reaches a height of 21 storeys. As it grows taller, the tower's distinctive shifted box design is starting to become apparent.

This design element will be accentuated by contrasting black and white tones, alternating as the slab edges of the balconies shift every four floors, with one section featuring white underpainting and light glass, and the next featuring black underpainting and dark glass.

The building's podium levels are being clad in precast sections with a brick finish, very similar in appearance to the product used by architects Graziani + Corazza at Pemberton's Neon Condos development near Yonge and Eglinton. Renderings of Riva del Lago indicate that building will also be clad in similar materials.

Upon topping off at 49-storeys, Lago at the Waterfront will for a while become the tallest structure on the Humber Bay Shores skyline, surpassing the Palace Pier towers, before eventually being surpassed itself by the 66-storey tower at Empire Communities' nearby Eau du Soleil condos.
