The new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital reached substantial completion on July 31st, just one day after the new Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness topped off in Brampton. The new complex is designed by Parkin Architects in joint venture with Adamson Associates Architects, and sits on the northwest corner of Dundas Street and Third Line in Oakville. This facility will replace the current 1950s-built location on Reynolds Street.
Now that interior and exterior construction is complete, Halton Healthcare will begin moving their medical team and equipment into the 1.6-million square foot facility, with the opening planned for December 2015. Once operational, Oakville Hospital will provide up to 457 beds for acute inpatient care, a full spectrum of outpatient services, and education and learning facilities such as a clinical teaching laboratory. Hospital operations will be supported by an onsite pharmacy, laboratory, and cafeteria.
Visitors to the hospital are welcomed to a spacious double-height lobby with access to both the four-storey Complex Continuing Care/Rehab Building and the eight-storey Inpatient Tower. A connection to nature has been emphasized throughout the hospital design with neutral colours and natural materials used whenever possible, and extensive landscaping across multiple courtyards for hospital patients and visitors. For a virtual tour of the planned hospital interior, check out the video below.
The Oakville Hospital is aiming for LEED Silver designation through green construction practices and design elements. This involves sourcing local or recycled construction material when possible and setting a goal of 75% construction waste diversion, as well as reducing longterm resource consumption with double glazed windows and efficient plumbing fixtures. Green initiatives will also enhance the human experience with larger windows for daytime lighting and bicycle parking for alternative access to the site.
Hospital construction began in September 2011, after Carillion Canada Inc., EllisDon Corporation, and Fengate Capital Management Limited were selected as developers as part of the winning bid on the 2010 RFP. This $2 billion project is being developed with a Design, Build, Finance, Maintain model, and is currently one of the largest public infrastructure projects to make use of an Alternative Financing and Procurement model.
The province has invested significantly in healthcare infrastructure around the GTA during the last few years, with projects like the recently completed Bridgepoint and Humber River Hospitals, as well as the Women’s College Hospital redevelopment and Peel Memorial Centre which are currently under construction.
