Symmetry Developments along with their partners Engine Developments and Fortress RDI have unveiled concept plans for an upcoming condominium proposal in the Bronte Village area of Oakville. Designed by the avant garde Modernist firm 5468796 Architecture of Winnipeg, the 14-storey building would stand as a beacon of innovative design, which has been a hallmark of Symmetry's work across the GTA.

We talked with Sayf Hassan of Symmetry about the proposal. So far, Hassan says, the partners have been in talks with the Oakville Planning Department, and they've spoken with local Town Councillors, but an application has not yet been submitted to the Town as the companies have not finalized the proposal design yet.

Lakeshore Woods condo concept for Bronte Village in Oakville by 5468796 Architecture for Symmetry, Engine, and Fortress RDI

That means that the image you are seeing is a concept image at this point, and things may change, but it points to what Symmetry and its partners want to accomplish here. Hassan asked Sasa Radulovic, partner at 5468796 Architecture for a modern design that would evoke Bronte Village's history as a Lake Ontario port, and Radulovic came back with an exterior that unmistakably brings to mind the sailboats that still ply the waters here in numbers. While the exact materials that would clad the structure have not been decided upon yet, materials that could be used for the sail-like elements include extruded aluminum, and a type of fibre cement board.

The building is also meant as a gateway when coming from the east into Bronte Village, a mostly low-rise commercial area along Lakeshore Road for which there is a Business Improvement Area, and which needs a shot of reinvestment especially at the east end where this building would be located. Hassan says that the BIA is receptive to the 14-storey proposal, which is similar in height to an existing adjacent residential tower to the south (and seen in the background of the rendering).

We will be following this proposal as it progresses through the planning process, and will seek to cover chances for public input.
