One of the most important north/south thoroughfares in Toronto, Spadina Avenue is also among the culturally richest streets in the country. In the 1960s, plans to raze much of Spadina Avenue threatened the street and its buildings for the construction of the ill-fated Spadina Expressway. Resistance to the project led by urbanist Jane Jacobs and former mayor John Sewell led to the eventual cancellation of the expressway, and the continued life of Spadina Avenue, Chinatown, and many other neighbourhoods that would have been negatively impacted by the project. In today's Photo of the Day, which was submitted to the UrbanToronto Flickr Pool by Oscar Flores, we are given an aerial view of Spadina Avenue, facing north.
