We recently kicked off a new feature on UrbanToronto we call Insider Q&A, where we get to know some of the movers and shakers who make things happen in the world of development, real estate and design. Today, we return with a profile of Daniel Winberg, a Principal at Rockport Group, the developer responsible for The Nest on St. Clair Avenue West and other projects.

UT: How did you start in the business?

DW: I have been fortunate to gain my experience over the past ten years working with a leading Canadian REIT, Bank and Pension Plan before joining the Rockport Group in July.

What is your role at the Rockport Group?

As a principal, I work alongside the land acquisition, property management, development and construction teams.

Tell us about any of your current projects.

We are starting construction on The Nest, a 9-story, 122 unit mid-rise condo at St. Clair and Hendrick in Hillcrest Village. The anticipated completion date is summer 2016. Construction is also under way on the Wicksteed Business Park, a commercial condo and self-storage project consisting of 50,000 square feet of condo and 80,000 square feet of self-storage. The anticipated completion date is summer 2015. In addition, we are starting work on Montgomery Square, a 27-storey, 233 unit multi-residential building at Yonge Street between Helendale and Montgomery, with an anticipated completion date of early 2017.

How about your company's future plans?

We are actively involved in mid-rise condo, commercial condo, seniors housing and new multi-residential development across the GTA. We plan to continue building on this platform.

What is your opinion on the current state of the Toronto market?

Good, but very much dependant on both the location and scale of a project.

What is your favourite project that you aren't currently involved with?

The Canary District. It's refreshing to see a significant project in Toronto nearing completion on time and budget.

What, in your opinion, is the current biggest issue facing Toronto and the GTA?

Transportation and congestion.

There is a lot to do in Toronto. What is your favourite thing to do in the city?

We live in an active city – I love running, cycling and walking in our great green spaces.

With so many professional sports franchises in the city, it can be hard to pick a favourite. Who is your team; the Argos, Blue Jays, FC, Maple Leafs or Raptors?

Raptors.

We thank Daniel for taking the time to answer our questions, and look forward to future work from Rockport Group. We will return soon with another Q&A session with one of the many insiders in Toronto's development scene.
