Toronto's Financial District is one of the busiest parts of town during normal business hours, but the relative lack of residential space has always sapped the area of its energy once office workers have headed home. Recent condominium developments have begun to change that now though, and projects like INDX Condos, promise to further the new trend.

Tucked in behind the construction site of the EY Tower at the corner of Temperance and Sheppard Streets, the Lifetime Developments and CentreCourt Developments project is now 10 storeys tall, and just starting to show up beyond its immediate block. Eventually, the 54-storey Page + Steele / IBI Group Architects-designed condominium tower will be easily seen from Nathan Phillips Square and other points in the core.

The development is rising on a block containing some of the Financial District's best examples of early 20th century architecture, with INDX weaving a contemporary design into the surrounding historic built form with a podium meant to complement the materials and massing of the neighbouring Graphic Arts Building, visible on the left hand side of the image below.

In the image below, a temporary canopy covers Temperance Street on the south side of the site. This has been installed to ensure that both vehicles and pedestrians are safe from any falling debris from the construction above. Seeing a temporary canopy covering a sidewalk is a common occurrence in Toronto, but having an entire road covered is much rarer.

When construction of the new condominium tower is complete, INDX will add 798 condominium units to the heart of Toronto's Financial District.
