The Erin Mills Town Centre opened in 1989 on Mississauga's far west side, and 25 years later it is now undergoing a $100-million makeover, aiming to become a 'world-class' urban retail destination and a vibrant place to meet and be entertained for the local community. 20VIC Management Inc.'s plan includes new high ceilings for the halls, improved natural lightening with skylights, European-style limestone flooring, and a 54 foot high glass atrium, housing the renewed and extended food court.
A major new architectural feature is already helping to transform the aging shopping centre into an ultra-modern destination. A new glass and steel sphere measures 283 feet in circumference and will crown the building where the mall's iconic clock tower stood from 1989 until earlier this year. Over the Winter, the clock tower started to be dismantled to make space for the glass sphere, designed by MCC Architects. This architectural element will be the largest of its kind in the world when completed.
In recent months, the local skyline has been dramatically transformed by the assembly of the sphere's tubular structure. The first elements of the skeleton were put together during the Summer months and quickly became visible across the area surrounding the mall.
As of today, the white-painted steel frame of the sphere is structurally complete and awaiting its transparent weatherproof seal. The glazing will allow natural light to flood in to the completely re-arranged mall space below, which will feature an reflecting infinity pool, with the intent to provide customers with an enhanced shopping experience.
The redevelopment plan is scheduled to be completed by the Summer of 2015. While the mall is still a work in progress, there is little doubt that the growing community of Erin Mills and the surrounding Mississauga neighbourhoods will enjoy a refreshed town centre space thanks to the mall's new landmark centrepiece.
