Finch West subway station. Sound familiar? It's not one of the better-known stations on Toronto's system, but that will change soon enough; it just has to open first!

It's every city planner's dream that when a new subway extension opens, new investment will flow into the communities that the line serves. Subways, with their ability to open the area around each station to people from across the city, instantly raise the value of that spot, putting it "on the map." In a city where traffic is just getting more congested all the time, that underground link to millions of daily commuters brings the assurance of ease of access far into the future.

With six new stations opening on the Spadina extension two years from now, the question was who would be first to take advantage of the new access the line would afford. In Toronto, the answer is the Real Wealth Group of Companies, who were smart enough to see the potential of a new condominium office and retail centre on Finch Avenue at Keele, steps from Finch West station. The eight-storey building, to be known as the University Heights Professional Centre for its proximity to York University, will bring office units ranging from 850 to over 2,500 square-feet, each with a full suite of amenities that include a dedicated kitchen and washroom space. Some units will even feature balconies, a rare feature in the world of commercial real estate. An open-air 500-square-foot patio and an emphasis on natural light throughout the project firmly establish the ACK Architects-designed structure as of our time.

The ground floor is dedicated to restaurant and retail tenants. Its textured design will draw pedestrians into the building, while ample retail street frontage will add interest to this stretch of Finch Avenue West.

In addition to the subway access, the University Heights Professional Centre will be provided with a two-storey underground parking lot with over 250 spaces.

University Heights Professional Centre represents smart investment in an area that will see much revitalization over the next decade as the new rapid transit access brings the whole city within reach. It's not surprising that it is stirring interest…
