Just under two years since the project broke ground, The Berwick and CityTowns by Andrin Homes and The Brown Group of Companies has officially topped off. We have been keeping a close eye on the construction of the 17-storey condominium and townhome development from the start of excavation up until the final floor's recent completion, and to provide a better illustration of the full construction process, we have compiled a collection of photos which summarize the work completed up until this point.
Construction commenced on the project in early 2012 with the demolition of a row of semi-detached homes lining Duplex Avenue, followed by the excavation of the site. The photo below, taken in March of last year by UT contributor Dumitru Onceanu, shows the site cleared and excavation underway.
As of a few months later, July of 2012 to be specific, Forum member 'confusion' snapped the following image, showing considerable excavation progress on the north side of site.
Excavation continued throughout the summer of 2012, and by fall, the dig had reached the bottom at the south end.
By this time last year, excavation of the site had been largely completed and the base for the project's tower crane was in place.
Construction accelerated through the winter months of early 2013, and by late-March concrete had risen to street level at the southern end of the site.
And only one month later, the first level of the Page + Steele / IBI Group-designed development could be seen above grade.
As of May, the southern end of the site continued to grow while the concrete spiral ramp at the north end of the site was taking shape below grade.
As the Spring changed to Summer, the lower floors of the tower portion continued to develop while construction pushed forward on the underground parking garage and townhouse foundations at the north end.
Concrete kept flowing on the tower portion, which reached three storeys in height by the end of June.
By July, we could see the tower beginning to take shape...
By the end of August, The Berwick had reached the halfway point in its climb towards 17 storeys.
And a month later, the tower had risen even more, revealing the next series of stepbacks.
At the end of October, the tower was pushing even closer to its final height.
By late November, The Berwick had topped off at 17 storeys.
When we stopped by the site yesterday afternoon for our final visit of the year, the first bits of cladding were visible on the western and southern façades of the now topped-out tower.
At the north end, the concrete for the CityTowns seems to be 98% done.
We will return in 2014 as the exterior finishing of The Berwick progresses and work picks up indoors. In the meantime, additional information including renderings and floorplans can be found in our dataBase file, linked below. Want to get involved in the discussion?
