In 2011, Mount Sinai Hospital launched a multi year, half billion dollar redevelopment campaign, the largest in the Hospital's history. Known as The Campaign to Renew Sinai, the project will expand and modernize the Hospital's facilities, equipment, and technology, as well as broaden the scope of their internationally-recognized clinical and research programs.

The redevelopment of Mount Sinai Hospital will now also include the addition of a brand new wellness and healing centre located at the north end of the main lobby, and visible from University Avenue. The creation of the Hennick Family Wellness Centre is made possible through a very generous contribution of $6 million by Jay and Barbara Hennick. The contemplative and inspiring indoor/outdoor space will feature over 100 artworks donated by the preeminent Canadian artist Sorel Etrog, recently the focus of a solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

In addition to the artwork, the serenely beautiful new BBB Architects-designed 2,560 sq. ft. Wellness Centre will have seating for patients and their families, an outdoor patio, and expansive floor-to-ceiling glass walls, providing lots of natural light and a direct connection to the city and outdoors. While most healing and respite areas focus on outdoor courtyards and gardens, the new Mount Sinai facility will centre on the affect of the surrounding environment, art and space on a patient's healing process, and will function through every season.

The concept is based on the extensive research completed on the relationship between art and space and health and wellness. Molyn Leszcz, Mount Sinai's Chief of Psychiatry, who was involved with this initiative says “We know that there is no health without mental health, and the new Hennick Family Wellness Centre will strengthen the physical, emotional, mental, social, environmental and spiritual health for our patients and their families.”

Once completed in early 2015, Mount Sinai intends that the state-of-the-art facility will serve as an example of the hospital's commitment to developing innovative and progressive approaches to medicine, clinical research, and patient care and experience.
