Located at the intersection of King and Sherbourne Streets in Old Town Toronto, work on King + Condos progresses with excavation now complete. While this project had a slow start owing to a string of hurdles (outlined in our last project update), we have started to see a lot of movement on the site. UrbanToronto's Edward Skira took a short walk down to the King+ location from our offices to capture some of the activity.
Currently on the site stands the facade of the former National Hotel, which TACT Architecture has preserved and blended into their design. As we can see from the photos, the heritage facade is being held in place by yellow steel bracing on the street side, while wooden beams hold it safely in place above the fully excavated site in back. Of particular note on this day: crews are installing the crane that will give rise to the 17-storey condominium.
When completed, the complex will consist of 132 one and two-bedroom loft-style suites and penthouse residences with city and lake views. That original brick wall from the National Hotel will be a key design element of the lobby, providing a historical backdrop to the otherwise modern design elements of stainless steel, polished stone floors, and coloured glass partitions.
UrbanToronto will continue to track the progress on the site as the building starts to take form.
