In a city with almost as many cranes as there are days in a year, construction in the trendy Bloor/Yorkville neighbourhood alone rivals that of many cities similar in size to Toronto. On the southeast fringe of this prestigious neighbourhood, construction continues on CHAZ Yorkville Condos, a 47-storey condominium by developer 45 Charles Ltd. and project manager Edenshaw Homes.
When we visited the site around the same time last month, work was underway on the second floor of the building’s podium. Returning a month later, 4 podium floors have risen with one more to go before construction begins on the typical tower floorplates above. Due to the repetitive nature of constructing tower floors, we can expect CHAZ to really take off in the coming months.
The Page + Steele/ IBI Group Architects-designed development will boast a uniquely faceted tower, featuring pronounced diagonals, and reminiscent of the Macy Dubois-designed brutalist concrete structure which formerly occupied the site.
While the majority of the podium will be clad in stone, the small triangular projections seen at various points around the podium will extend upwards seamlessly into the tower, using the same glazing that will be used on the typical floors above.
Comparing the photos above with the rendering below provides a much better illustration of how this design element will be executed.
