The influx of residential development into Downtown's East side is continuing to pick up the pace as the rebirth of these neighbourhoods become more evident. 48 Power Street at Adelaide and Parliament is the latest site to grab our attention. The new building if approved would replace a few existing properties including the former Sing Tao Daily News building and a 12 unit rental building at 125 Parliament Street (all of the units are proposed to be replaced in the new condo). Here is a photo of the existing property on Power Street at Adelaide Street East.

The proposal by Great Gulf in partnership with Hullmark calls for a new 22-storey building designed by avant garde modernist Teeple Architects, consisting of a mixed-use six-storey podium topped by a 16-storey exclusively residential tower with pronounced angular graphic qualities. The entire development would contain 431 residential units in about 29,350 sqaure metres of space. The tower would also contain 1,114 square metres of retail space on the lower levels as well as 204 parking spaces for cars and 439 for bikes.

The proposal is still in its early stages: a development proposal sign has been posted outside the site (from which the image above was photographed by UT contributor Chester Copperpot), and the first public meeting will likely occur in the fall.
