Scheduled to take place on June 26th, 2013, the 9th Annual Pug Awards: People's Choice for Architecture, have listed the nominees and opened the polls for the public, relying on the voice of the people to be the deciding factor on who receives awards for their outstanding architectural work within the City of Toronto.

Orginally created by Anna Simone, Founding Partner and Principal of Cecconi Simone, and Gary Berman, President and Chief Operating Officer of Tricon Capital Group, the Pugs Awards were designed to honour Toronto's most creative architects, as well as highlight and critique the more mediocre and unattractive efforts of the past year. The purpose for involving the public in voicing their opinions on who should be recognized for their work, is to encourage public engagment in the field of development and design. Through these awards, architects and planners receive a better understanding of what sort of architecture and buildings make Toronto a more attractive city to the public, and will incorporate many of the popular aspects of their former work into future projects.

This year, out of the 14 Commercial/Institutional Nominees and 29 Residential Nominees, there is a very diverse and vibrant selection. Educational buildings, police stations, lavish hotels and even a jail are some of the nominees listed under the Commerical/Insitutional category, and give voters an idea of how drastically the options differ from one another. The qualifications for the Pug Awards indicate that the buildings must have been completed in 2012, must have an area greater than 50,000 square feet and have to be located in the City of Toronto.
