There's a constant demand for new condominiums in the dynamic Bloor-Yonge area, one of the city's most important commercial and cultural hubs. Just south of the bustling intersection, Charles Street East too has seen nearly constant construction activity for close to a decade. Now under construction, CHAZ Yorkville Condos is the latest highrise luxury tower to hit the neighbourhood, joining others like The Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences and The Uptown Residences.
UrbanToronto forum member drum118 recently photographed the ongoing construction of the below-grade reinforced concrete structure.
Drum118's photos from April 17 show that the lowest floor of the garage was essentially being completed at that time and that work was underway to prepare the next level for its pour, which will happen over the shiny black boards seen below. They will be removed once the concrete has cured enough by collapsing the extendable metal posts from below them. Everything is then reassembled one floor higher to prepare for the next floor.
When this Page + Steele / IBI Group Architects designed tower is completed it will rise 47 storeys, its form growing and twisting away from a five-storey limestone-clad podium. Locally renowned Cecconi Simone is designing the interiors. Amenity spaces will include billiards rooms, secluded lounge areas, an indoor/outdoor dining area with two-sided fireplace, but the standout feature is also the project's architectural '“pièce de résistance”, a cantilevered box framed in white concrete over 30 storeys in the air. It is a two-storey party room with exceptional views of the city's core.
This venture by 45 Charles Ltd with project manager Edenshaw Homes has got a long ways to go before the projected 2014 completion target. We will keep you updated as the tower continues to rise and affect the growing Yorkville skyline.
