Construction is moving along at 36Hazelton, a joint venture between the Alterra Group and Zinc Developments. The renovation of the school-turned-office building will be a welcome addition to the upscale neighbourhood of Yorkville, a redevelopment of the site that thoughtfully preserves the heritage aspects of the property while introducing boutique condos.

Forum member Edward Skira recently took these snaps of the development still in its early stages.

The former home of St. Basil’s Catholic School is but a shell of its old self, its existing structure having been almost entirely demolished in order to set the scene for the work to come. The brightly coloured steel trusses that have been temporarily installed along Hazelton Ave remain, their structural framework reinforcing the heritage façade while construction progresses behind.

The old shell will be retrofitted to accommodate a contemporary glass and zinc five-storey build terraced back from the street and the historic brick circa-1928 façade that will be restored and incorporated into the final design. The building will house 19 exclusive luxury residences with floor to ceiling windows and large balconies or generous landscaped terraces, paired with amenities like wine tasting & storage, a billiards room, and a fitness studio.

Hazelton Avenue is Yorkville's most exclusive residential street, a tree-lined roadway that runs one-way northbound from Scollard Street to Davenport Road, one block east of Avenue Road. The site has been excavated to lay the foundations to include 3 levels of below-grade parking.
