Alexandria's MaRS Centre Phase 2 at the southeast corner of College Street and University Avenue recently reached its maximum height, topping off at 20 storeys. With the exterior glass cladding nearly finished as well, the building appears to be on track to meet its completion date of fall 2013. It is the latest addition to the MaRS Discovery District, fixed onto the west end of Darling & Pearson's Toronto General Hospital, which opened in 1913.
The Bregman & Hamann Architects-designed 800,000 square foot MaRS Centre Phase 2 expands the modern facilities of Toronto's Hospital Row and will combine with existing facilities to create the largest research and technology cluster in Canada. The space will be used by both public and private sector entities, with its major tenants being public sector agencies such as Public Health Ontario and the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research.
The MaRS Centre Phase 2 features its own entrance to Queen's Park subway station, which opened in the summer. This development joins a number of recent projects further south along University, incuding the Residences at the RCMI and Living Shangri-La Toronto.
