In today's Photo of the Day, we get a look at a New York City subway entrance in place for a movie shoot — a common sight in Toronto. If only it were that easy for us to get a new downtown subway line. The most optimistic estimates for a proposed Downtown Relief Line (DRL) to ease congestion on the Yonge subway are about 20 to 25 years from now. The biggest question of course is how to fund it.

The Yonge subway line is already at capacity during peak hours. As it stands now, the line moves 6,000 people every 15 minutes during the morning rush, and with ridership growing every year, even the new subway trains and a new signalling system that will allow trains to run closer together will not be enough to ease congestion in the future. Little wonder a DRL is quickly becoming the TTC's top priority, after the Finch and Sheppard LRT deals are finally inked with Metrolinx.
