With the staggering amount of condominium development underway throughout the city and the jaw-dropping prices that units are now fetching, it’s all too easy to forget the real cost of living, and the difficulty that thousands have coming up with enough money for day-to-day sustenance, never mind a mortgage. In an attempt to draw attention to Canada’s homelessness crisis, OCADU asked students participating in the annual Four by Six Design Competition to come up with innovative solutions that could help the nearly 300,000 Canadians that are identified as being homeless or at-risk.

The first place project, Revolution, proposes to amend Canada’s Constitution Act in order to ensure adequate funding for social welfare, separating it from the often fickle and tumultuous political policy debate. Coming in second was Toronto Beyond Homelessness, a campaign that proposes to give homeless people a "virtual" address through which they can tell their stories and establish networks that could theoretically lead to new opportunities.

OCADU will be displaying all of the student team’s concepts until Friday November 2nd in the Great Hall, located at 100 McCaul Street. You can read the full competition brief here.
