As one of the city's best architectural patrons, the University of Toronto's St. George campus holds a treasure trove of buildings that are designed with a thoughtfulness and creativity seldom seen elsewhere in the city. Captured by Forum member CML, this photo shows KPMB's expansion of the Rotman School of Business undergoing the final phase of construction. Designed as a series of stacked boxes that seem to float above one another, the form was dictated by the idea of an integrated vertical campus that allows for ease of connections between different components of an institution. Draped in a skin of dark grey glass, the choice of cladding adds a wonderful richness and depth reminiscent of that found at the Toronto-Dominion Centre. Mitigating in scale between the robust and dominant Robarts Library, also undergoing a renovation, and the more human scale of the historic structures to its west, this building is a welcome addition to the U of T's already impressive portfolio of contemporary architecture.
