The city is in a flurry today regarding the sudden demolition of what many considered to be a historic property. 81 Wellesley Street East, located just east of Church Street was reportedly bought back in September for $4.5 million, according to Urbanation. Little news came of the project until December 1stof last year, when a demolition proposal was submitted. We expected to see quite the community opposition, however yesterday pictures came through showing the sudden demolition of the building, former home to Wellspring Odette House, taking place.

A move many are calling outright sneaky, city newspapers derided the absence of public consultation, and the apparent lack of heritage preservation services taking action to protect what many considered to be a staple building of the Church and Wellesley neighborhood.

What seems to frustrate UrbanToronto forum members the most is the omission of any public development proposal for the site; no developer is associated with the property as of yet, and no rendering or project information has been released. Toronto has a rocky history of protecting our heritage structures, and while progress has been made with such projects as Five St. Joseph, we clearly have some work to do. We'll keep you updated regarding any future plans for the site as they become available. Let us know what you think below, and join the full conversation on the project forum here.
