In today's project of the day we look at Concord Cityplace and focus in on one of the more recent projects, Quartz Condos by Concord Adex. Located just south of the recently highlighted Parade development, Quartz is designed by RAW architects, with interiors by Figure3.

Quartz will reach a height of 41 storeys when it's completed, with an extended podium stretching westwards from the sleek glass tower. The building takes advantage of its location on the southern edge of Cityplace, and has smartly oriented itself so residents can take advantage of downtown and west-end views rather than having the long edge facing the Gardiner Expressway. It also takes advantage of being directly across the street from the recently completed Canoe Landing Park, the Douglas Coupland-designed eight-acre urban park.

Concord Adex sought out Figure3 to design unique, practical and contemporary suites suited for the young urban professional. Trying to create unique bachelor and small one-bedroom suites is often impractical, however at Quartz Figure3 has been able to design truly multi-functional spaces, oriented around a concept of a central "core," off of which sliding glass partitions and open floor plans allow for a truly customizable space. A bedroom can become an extension of the living space if need be, or can be completely separated for added privacy.

The exterior of Quartz is inspired by its namesake polished gemstone, and it employs a variety of materials which should create an interesting play of light and texture once completed. Thick, darkened frames separate the dynamic glass facade, creating a strong geometrical aesthetic that is carried down to the street level as well as the podium.

The podium contains a range of suites as well as the amenities, which include a games room, fitness centre, movie theatre, roof deck, gymnasium and swimming pool. Figure3 wanted to channel the simultaneously bright as well as moody nature of quartz gemstones, contrasting the darker, more sensual rooms intended for relaxation with the light-filled recreational spaces.

Construction has already begun on the site, and you can rely on UrbanToronto forum members to provide up-to-date images of how it’s progressing. Below you can see the most recent image from November 20th, showing the excavation of the site.
