Vaughan's new downtown, the 'Vaughan Metropolitan Centre', is one step closer to reality with the opening of sales at the first major development geared to urbanizing Vaughan's core, the Cortel Group's Expo City. The opening took place at Expo City's presentation centre on Highway 7 - now officially Avenue 7 - east of Jane Street. Those on hand to cut the ceremonial red ribbon were members of the Cortelluci family along with architect Alan Tregebov (left), Thornhill MPP Peter Shurman (fourth from left), and Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua (furthest to right holding the ribbon).
Expo City will eventually have five condominiums towers with several low-rise buildings providing arcaded retail at ground level. It all starts with Expo 1, a 37-storey tower with a wave designed into vertical fins rising beside a five floor podium. The design is by architect Alan Tregebov of YYZed Project management.
Expo City will rise immediately to the east of parkland, replete with a large pond, along the Black Creek.
Expo 1 will share amenities, housed in a ground level glass pavilion, with Expo 2.
While each tower of Expo City will have a different motif – we hear that Expo 2 will have flared fins in place of Expo 1's waves – all phases will be of a family and will be grounded by similar low-rise podium buildings.
Here's another view of the site, this one from the west along Highway 7.

UrbanToronto has a new dataBase entry for the station will many renderings, including some views of the kind of development that the municiplaity is looking to transform it's 'Metropolitan Centre' with.
