Digging is underway at Pemberton's Bay-Bloor area project U Condos, on the site of St. Michael's College at the northeastern edge of the University of Toronto grounds. UrbanToronto members ShonTron and Androiduk contributed these photos in the last few days which document the start of the downward movement.

The complex will be made up of two towers and an encircling set of townhomes lining Bay and St. Mary Streets. Peter Clewes of architectsAlliance has etched sweeping diagonals into the towers' facades by moving banks of balconies across each face as they rise, while adding long strands of fritted windows which will resemble ornamental grasses blowing in the wind. The design should prove memorable in a city that often seems marked more by similar buildings than standouts.

We are looking forward to watching this complex rise.
