Regent Park is coming down one block at a time. The 1940's era City Of Toronto housing project began with good intentions but soon turned into an area plagued by high crime and poverty. The built form of the project was a big reason for this. So a few years back it was decided to tear down the full project one section at a time to be replaced by social and market driven housing. Parliament and Dundas has already been nicely redeveloped by the Daniels Corporation. The next phase of this project is now starting and it means goodbye to some of Peter Dickinson's classics. Architect Dickinson put his stamp on the city back in the 1950's by designing structures such as the O'Keefe (now Sony) Centre, Inn On The Park, The Benvenuto Apartments and much more. At Regent Park his contribution were five towers located north of Shuter just west of River Street. Well these five towers will soon be reduced to one tower as demolition begins for the next phase of the redevelopment. The one saving grace is the one tower that will be saved to preserve Dickinson's legacy. Construction fencing is up.
