Toronto Union Subway Station: Second Platform and Concourse Improvements | ?m | ?s | TTC | IBI Group

aren't they supposed to get some high tech automated control system to allow for really efficient track switching, train frequencies, etc. ?

wouldn't that compensate for any lost time due to human control?
Yes, but it would be impossible to coordinate the subway cars without having some to wait while the other waits until the first one leaves. It would be a much better idea to just have a second, deeper platform.

Btw we're talking about the DRL here, right?

But if the ultimate frequency is only one train every 90 seconds, that would mean if every second train is on a different line, then the ultimate capacity on the Yonge line is one every 3 minutes - which isn't enough capacity.

If you put a second line through Union, you need a second set of tracks in the station.

might as well build another station then.

so now the question is, underneath or along side?

I think the DRL should run underneath the current Union subway station. And it should be a St. George-type transfer.

The most critical capacity issue at Union Station occurs at the concourse level, and not on the platforms. The existing ticket booths and turnstyles provide nowhere near enough capacity to accommodate the crush loads that occur during rush hour and following events at the ACC, and the pedestrian traffic heading to/from the PATH makes things worse. Fix this, and most crowding problems will be solved.

The new separate platform for northbound Yonge commuters will provide sufficient capacity at platform level for decades to come. The peak boarding patterns at Union are such that the passengers are always getting on an empty train, and therefore there's very little congestion and the dwell time is short. In the morning rush when hoards of GO passengers get on the subway, the trains have already let everyone off at points to the north. After a game at the ACC, it's so late that the trains are empty anyway. The actual dwell times are currently extremely low at Union, therefore adding a third platform down the middle is of no benefit.

Union Station may serve a high number of passengers, but it functions more like a terminal station than a transfer station. It will never have the crowding issues that Yonge and Bloor encounters, is a poor candidate for a DRL station, and won't need any more platform platform upgrades than are currently planned. Fix the concourse level, and we'll be fine.

How can you say that Union Station is a poor candidate for a DRL station?! It would not only help relieve the Yonge line, but a connection at Union would allow Go passengers to transfer to whichever line's closest to their office (or just place they want to get to.) If you think a Queen alignment is better, then that's it's own issue, but you can't say that Union Station is a bad candidate just because you think a Queen alignment is better.

They could put the DRL station under the actual Union Station when/if they dig out the basement for a second concourse level. That way the DRL station could link to the expanded Streetcar platform which will conect to the new union platfom allowing for a connection of subays through the streetcar station.

Union is bad because it would be needlessly complex and may not even be possible without throwing enormous amounts of money at it. Most of the towers in the core are within short walking distance of the existing YUS stations via the PATH already so an extra transfer option seems rather redundant.

Woh..

There are overcrowding problems on the Platform and in the concourse level.

TTC Union Station renovation

Creating it to a 3 platform station to help prevent overcrowding and both sides of subway will open!

It'll be a two-platform station, not a three-platform station.

There's already a thread about this
Indeed there is. Although, mostly out of charity, I'm going to say that someone could make a case for spinning off the TTC platform project into a separate thread from work on Union Station proper.

I'm not about to be that person, though, so lock?

The tender close date for this project ( T11PN09868 ) has been pushed to July 26th, so one week to go until this project is finally under way after years and years of delay.
