Toronto Union Subway Station: Second Platform and Concourse Improvements | ?m | ?s | TTC | IBI Group

A acoustic divisor between tracks would be nice elsewhere in the system. On the stations I use, the lack of a barrier between the bogies on an opposite train means the brake squeal is incredibly loud compared to a train pulling into a nearside platform as the platform underfoot blocks the sound. Even if the entire track wasn't walled off as in the rendering above, a low 2-3 foot barrier would help and surely wouldn't cost the earth compared to the monstrous carbuncle they are building at Museum.

I wonder if it ever dawned on anyone in the planning process to consider building or at least setting aside room for additional tracks in the future? A DRL would be alot more feasible notion had they done this.

Because I couldn't think of anyone else to put this:

(this one is blurry but I imagine this is what it would look like if you though the car was about to hit you):

Will this project ever begin?

Just curious if any of the transit insiders on the board know....

Will this project ever begin? The sewer relocation was complete quite awhile ago.

Still no update on the TTC's website for the project.

This was first approved when Mike Harris was still the Premier, Mel Lastman was Mayor and Chretien was Prime Minister.

No one said Toronto moves too quickly!

Is there any room to do that? Union Station practically butts up against Royal Trust Tower and Union's Go Concourse. Adding additional lines means taking space away from these 2 buildings.

...and those 3 gentlemen promised the world 2 things.....

1. this project would be ready and finished in time for the 2008 olympics
2. It would go ahead regardless of the success of our olympic bid.

Promise 1 has been broken but, to answer your question, they would never dishonour promise 2 would they? mmmmm lets see, what other promises did they make that day....oh, yeah, we should be able to drive along Front Street past Bathurst to Dufferin and onto the westbound Gardiner....how's that goin'?

We really are slow and unreliable when it comes to infrastructure projects.

Update from March 25th WT Board Meeting:

Union Station Platform

The TTC has provided progress report number 29 for the Union Station Second Platform project which identifies a projected construction cost of $165.8 million, or $28.3 million more than the $137.5 million allocated in the LTP. The TTC continues to assess potential Value Engineering options available to reduce the total cost. The TTC also advises that the project is currently over four months behind schedule due primarily to drawing delays and the VE exercise. WT has requested that the TTC provide an updated forecast of costs including VE items.

The Royal Trust Tower is the second tallest of the TD Centre buildings, up on King Street... so you mean Royal Bank Plaza.

While it's true that Union Subway Station extends close to the north edge of Front Street and therefore the RBP and the Royal York Hotel, there is space between the subway station and Union Station itself, specifically under the south sidewalk and Union Station's moat, all of which is wide enough to handle another two tracks and platform.

Prometheus:

There were some very old ones (dated to 2005) - but I am not sure if any of them actually resembles the current proposal. They're all kinda blah.

^^^will it look anything like that?

can't remember but union station is a center platform right?

The tracks stays where they were - basically, they are adding a platform to the south and walling off the original island platform on the same side.

ah, so they're converting from center platform only to 1 side of track platform and 1 center of tracks platform.

from:

----------------------------track
======================platform
----------------------------track

to:
----------------------------track
======================platform
----------------------------track
======================platform (new)

but why wall off the center platform? it can be used as a spill over if the south most track gets too busy. safety reasons? reduce confusion?
