Is the facade an addition? Just because the rear part's brick doesn't mean it's older; it may only mean it's not "for show"...

Yeah, nuthin' looks Victorian on that building; they just spent a wee bit more on the Bloor facade than along the laneway. Before the cheapo replacement windows went in years ago, that was likely a nice looking little piece of streetscape.

Looks like it is beginning--heavy equipment due any day imo:

^ I don't know the specific reason for this site, but in general across the city there is a financing chill occuring in the condo sector that will pose some problems for a number of projects as well as labour shortages that are a huge issue given the number of units sold over the past two or three years.

Refer to the 21 Avenue Rd. thread for a hint - (It's a very specific legal issue regarding what was promised and what will be delivered).

The owner/developer is Sheldon Esbin, who perhaps may be caught up in the US mortgage/lending crisis through his main company, http://www.romspen.com/

Romspen Investment Corporation is a Toronto based nationwide independent commercial mortgage lender and real estate financier, specializing in commercial first and second mortgages as well as mezzanine, participation and construction loans.Romspen’s extensive lending capabilities enable it to meet unique financing objectives in a very timely manner.

Romspen does not discriminate against properties requiring environmental decontamination or decommissioning. Neither will Romspen reject a mortgage application solely on the basis of the property’s use. For example, Romspen finances single purpose restaurant buildings, churches, funeral homes, service stations, golf courses, mixed use buildings, medical facilities, vacant or partially vacant office buildings, refrigerated food buildings, cleaning plants, and most every kind of mixed use industrial and retail property. You will deal directly with the decision maker and will never wait for a committee to review your file. Each individual request for financing is reviewed by the principals and all applications are given the same consideration.

I suspect the neighbouring building was bought by Mr. Esbin (200 Bloor West) as a preventative measure/competitor to Bazi's Mcdonald's proposal. Probably going for more height here, or perhaps twinning the Museum House project, replacing the "lost" laneway with a pedestrian/public lane way behind the site, wrapping around to Opus on Prince Arthur? I noticed a house behind M.H's lot is currently undergoing renovation, with a large laneway conveniently lining up with M.H's.....
