Another crane, they just dont stop

A glimpse of the white Amherst hoist crane (at right) installing the crane for the Massey Tower. The white and red crane to the left of it is the recently installed crane for the 17-storey addition to St. Michael's Hospital on the n/e corner of Queen St E. and Victoria Street. The yellow crane behind it is the crane for The Residences of 488 University Avenue.


After it is set in place, the Massey Tower crane will not be visible from this angle for a while until the building is substantially above grade level.


When the 60-storey, 683 foot tall Massey Tower, and the 55-storey, 679 foot Residences of 488 University buildings are topped off a couple of years from now, they will have a major impact on Toronto's skyline when viewed from the east, stretching it northward. To put the heights of these two buildings in perspective, they fall in between the heights of the two Bay-Adelaide Centre towers (BAC West is 715 feet tall and BAC east is 643 feet tall). Massey Tower will be 10 feet taller than the L-Tower. It will be interesting to follow the construction of both of these buildings and 88 Scott Street, not to mention Great Gulf's two Yonge + Rich condo buildings which will probably commence construction in early 2016.

Don't forget Sixty Colborne, which, while much shorter than all the other buildings under construction in that shot, should end up blocking off a good chunk of the King Edward Hotel from that perspective!

I think they might use this crane to install the other crane.

Along with all of the crane raising shots above—lots of great, detailed pics (and quite the cool one where the helicopter was coming or going from St. Michael's Hospital across the street!)—we have a front page story up here which details what going on at the site these days.

This crane will last for the first dozen or so floors, then will be replaced by a crane in the tower itself, and another one will eventually arrive for the Massey Hall backstage rebuild.

Is it me, or does this building have a sad face, two eyes, and a bald head? What can I say, Percocet is one hell of a drug!

Speaking of multiple cranes, just off topic for a second...Dubai has been bragging for years they have the most cranes on earth, as their construction pace isn't slowing any time soon. With that said, do any of you professionals out there know how Toronto ranks crane wise? We must be near the top for the number of cranes considering almost everywhere you look there's at least one or two cranes near by, no?

I think it was Adma a few years ago who wrote that the Bank of Toronto building made him want to go juice some oranges......
