Toronto events and festivals

Ah too bad, I've missed that zombie walk, I would love to go as vegetarian zombie grunting "Graaains!" instead of "Braaains!". :)

I went one year and this one guy kept doing that. It was pretty hilarious. His many lines included but were not limited to:
I'm a vegetarian zombie!!! Graaains!
I'm a plumber zombie!!! Draaaaains!!
I'm a dry cleaner zombie!! Staaaains!!
I'm a conductor zombie!! Traaains!!!

He did this for the entire zombie walk and somehow it didn't get old even after an hour.

Toronto's first poutine festival - Toronto Star article:
Poutine Festival Coming to Toronto in August
Toronto Poutine Fest is an all-you-can-eat celebration of our native dish, taking place at The Beer Academy, 75 Victoria St., from 5 to 10 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22.

By: Michele Henry Food reporter, Published on Fri Jul 12 2013

Fries, cheese and gravy already get the individual attention they deserve in today’s foodie society, so it’s high time then to fete the delicious results of their sublime combination. That is precisely what a new Toronto startup is planning for a late August weekend. Toronto Poutine Fest, the city’s first-ever dedicated celebration of the Canadian dish, promises to pay proper homage to the almighty poutine.

“The fact that Toronto hasn’t had a poutine festival yet is insane,†said Melissa Chien, co-founder, along with two others, of Joylister, the fledgling events company throwing the event. “It’s embarrassing.†Organizers are expecting more than 400 lovers of salt and fat to converge on The Beer Academy, at 75 Victoria St., from 5 to 10 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22, to partake in an all-you-can-eat poutine situation. For $35 (purchase tickets at www.Torontopoutinefest.com) you get all of the poutine you can eat — vendors will be filling sample bowls all night long — three cups of craft beer selected specifically to pair with the various types of curd, fry and gravy combo and a vote to crown the Poutine King of Toronto...

A cronut burger — a hamburger with a croissant-donut mix for a bun, topped with a maple bacon-jam — is one of many Frankenstein-like selections on the menu at this year's Canadian National Exhibition. The annual festival often makes headlines for its outrageous food offerings, which have in the past included deep-fried butter, a cheeseburger with a donut bun surrounding it and BLT sandwiches that also had Nutella spread and back-bacon...

The grid photos:

Cronut Burger with a croissant-donut mix for a bun, topped with a maple bacon jam.

The Spice Cream Cone from Just Cone It: vanilla ice cream topped with bacon, chili peppers, and Nutella.

More Nutella from Spread Nutellerie Toronto in the form of sweet potato fries drizzled with the chocolate sauce.

Though a brioche bun stuffed with chocolate gelato sounds odd, it’s actually a common summertime treat in Sicily. This version is from Sweet Escapes and people can choose flavours like Oreo, salted caramel, strawberry, pistachio, and tiramisu. It’s not overly sweet and the warm, soft brioche pairs wonderfully with the gelato.

I really don't wanna miss TIFF this year:

Not because of Nicolas Cage or Zac Efron. I still haven't seen a lot of last year's films: The Hunt, Amour or Pieta are still on my list with several others. And I haven't seen the detailed program of this year's festival, but I desperately need some holiday. Plus I am not much of a fan of blockbusters either.

I take in most of the Midnight Madness program every year, some of the films never get seen again locally beyond obscure video stores like Queen Video, Suspect or Eyesore though that is evolving now what with Netflix, iTunes etc. The audience at the Ryerson (a 1200 seat venue) is fantastic and Colin Geddes is a good programmer. So far I've seen "All Cheerleaders Die", not so great, "The Station" (Austria) which was terrific and last night Eli Roth's ("Hostel") first film in six years, the jungle cannibal film, "Green Inferno" which was dynamite. I'm really tired so I'm taking tonight off, five more to go.

Red Bull Race The Place @ Ontario Place Saturday April 19

Any cyclists here? This looks like fun! :
Red Bull Race the Place Set to Hit Toronto
After shutting its gates for 2 years, Ontario Place opens up for an unprecedented event.
On April 19th, Red Bull Race the Place will take over Toronto’s iconic island for the first-ever urban cycling race at the site.

This is not the kind of amusement ride you remember as a kid; racers will be taken on a speed-soaked chase through the island’s industrial jungle full of hairpin turns, pedal heavy straight-aways and other urban obstacles.

It will be the first time anyone has accessed Ontario Place since it closed to the public in 2011.

From urban cycle racing's modest start with messengers, to its less-than-legal rise on city streets, the race format has sparked a global movement with Toronto being home to a thriving bike culture all its own.

The competitors´ day starts off with time trials from 10:30am and will go on throughout the day. A vendors village will provide tons of side activities to do for everyone, before all eyes are set on the mass start final starting at 6:30pm.

Admission is free for spectators.

Registration buttons are below, you must be age 18+ to register.

There are two available categories: 1. True Fixed gear/ track bike set up (brakes allowed). 2. Open Category: You dream it, you ride it, as long as there is no motor!

Hashtag Gallery presents Retro Future Art Exhibition an custom made art contest that seeks a curious painting to decorate a meeting room in a boutique ad agency in Toronto.

Once you get past those busy corners there's actually a pleasant stretch of commercial real estate between Bathurst and Trinity Bellwoods park on Dundas - and Hashtag gallery is one of the brightest spot in the landscape. This gallery's success has inspired other small shops, restaurants and other art galleries to move into the area. The Hashtag Gallery venue is fast becoming famous for its unusual approaches to selling art through social media marketing, and by hosting contests and 'art challenges' such as this event.
