Pictures of massive pits like this really make me wonder how much dirt has been removed from the city of Toronto in the last 10 years.

I think the opposite. How much material (sand, gravel etc.) has come into the city to build all these concrete and steel towers?

Also where in the world have they come from.

I am always reminded of the story of Scotia Plaza's exterior which is made of Red Napoleon Granite, quarried in Sweden, cut and polished in Italy, then imported to Canada.

I don't think we'll ever see those kind of things happen again these days, since developers are usually all about cheapening things out and sourcing materials from China. I'm not saying that this applies to this development at all, but 90% of the development we see today usually follow one of those two routes. An example can be seen just a few meters away over at Jade.

They must have moved more than 50,000 cubic metres of waste from the site so far.

There will over 4 times that amount removed from the site by the time the parking garage excavation is complete.

How many floor levels does the basement floor go down? It looks like four.
