Makes me wonder if this option (constructing a new tower and converting the old to residential) was ever considered by the Four Seasons, instead of the option they went for to completely relocate.

Four Seasons doesn't own their real estate so I'm sure they went for the best deal. And waiting for this to be built would have not been a good thing for them.

They would have considered it I am sure, but they wanted a flagship property in Toronto, so they needed a site where they could work with a blank slate, one not constrained by the current buildings, and one not constrained height-wise by the view corridor behind the Ontario Legislature.

Today; from the northeast, you can see they're not actually as close to the old FS as it looks like when you're standing beside it.

And we have cladding. Too early to tell how it'll look until there's more of it, but I'll say it's not as terrible as I'd been expecting.

Yes, as is the reflective quality of the glass itself. Here's a few more from yesterday where you can get a sense of that.

Still, there are a few panels that scare me (and the building was definitely rendered with a much higher quality curtain wall, but you know).
