Burying power lines cost money. They also disrupt traffic, initially when burying them and later to maintain them. Can't do that when there are no development fees to pay for that, except from property taxes.

Maintaining overhead powerlines ALSO disrupts traffic, as the overhead crews always shutdown the lane that they are working in.

The NIMBYs on St. Clair Avenue West demanded the the power lines be buried. They did. Then they complained about the cost was too high, because they buried the power liens.

So the NIMBYs in Streetsville didn't want the expense of burying the power lines, so now they complain about the sight of the visible power lines.

Make up your minds.

Ok. Burry them. People are always going to complain so why not do the right thing? I mean really, sometimes i'm amazed our sewer lines and water mains don't run at street level too.

That's a lot of straw men in one post. My mind is made up and always has been. Overhead power lines should always be out of sight on pedestrian oriented main streets, just like they are in the rest of the industrialized (and much of the not so industrialized) world.

That looks fantastic. It's interesting how the line between the public space and roadway is blurred by not having a raised sidewalk and by using the same paving. The road can be turned into pedestrian space seamlessly connected with the square. It's the way old market squares now function in many European cities. The substantial stage structure also gives it a metropolitan look.

We should build squares like this one in neighbourhoods around Toronto (perhaps larger in size). It's where farmers' markets and festivals can go throughout the year. Queen West comes to mind as place that could use at least one such neighbourhood square.

What I can't help but notice is how amazing the red brick looks. Toronto should really take notice, since even when we do bother with brick paving nowadays it's almost always grey. And a really dreary grey at that. The red adds so much vibrancy.

We always find an excuse in this province. Every other jurisdiction that I've ever been to finds a way to do it, even other provinces in Canada. But our provincial slogan seems to be "it can't be done".

Agreed. This is ridiculous. Every time we start tearing up streets for repaving and sewage work, we need to look at also burying power lines.

Not bad at all. I can't believe an Ontario BIA went with modern instead of "ye olde." Something Toronto's still haven't figured out.

They mixed a modern stage and lighting with traditional red brick. The strong modern elements are somewhat ironic since Streetsville is fairly quiant. But with the exception of the overhead wires, it looks good.
