St Lawrence Market

They still have to finish off the actual intersection at Front & Sherbourne - I'm curious if that is part of this contract or not.
Of course it is part of the contract. The contract runs from King to Lake Shore and as soon as they restart work after the PAG they will be finishing off at the south end (closing the right-turn channel and 'fixin' up' the area on the west side to match the work they have done on east side and then moving to the King to Front block and the intersection. Part of the reason that this block & intersection were left until the end is the continuing 9and no longer with permission) blockage of the street & sidewalk at King and Sherbourne. Apparently they will be evicted shortly, their last permit ran out on May 31. (In the area just south of the rail berm it is great to see the work being done in preparation for extending the bike path that runs south of the berm from Parliament to Jarvis 9and maybe Yonge. This Plan was never seen as being a plan that would all be executed at one time but rather a guide to what was needed. New developments and street improvements help fund it and the 2014 lighting on Front from Jarvis to Parliament was installed with BIA and Section 37 money and follows the plan. There are current discussions about Scott Street and there is actually a meeting next week on possible replacement of the green lights south of The Esplanade east of Sherbourne. Proper permanent heritage lighting of St James Cathedral is part of the plan to fix up St James Park in 2016 or 2017 and there has been some discussion bout lighting the Dominion Federal Building that MAY move ahead now it has been sold. It is far too slow but it IS happening, slowly!

Sweet! I can't wait until they replace the ugly green lights that the lenses fall out of, with the new heritage lights that cars keep knocking down. :|
 
I would expect that any developments at the Cathedral will depend on the new dean and whatever her fundraising priorities are. In any event, they are about to do some sort of work on the King Street facade. They had the parks people take out the perennial borders some weeks ago to facilitate putting up scaffolding there.
 
One side of the steeple has been inconsistent in appearane with others for at least a couple of decades. Speaking of which; does anyone if more of St. Michaels cathedral will be lit, or just the steeple?

The Starbucks at corner of King & George (where the fire was a few months ago) seems to have closed -all signage removed. I assume the building (it's Listed) will be repaired but it has all been rather slow.
 
The Heritage Conservation District Plan for St Lawrence is coming for approval by the Toronto Preservation Board on 5 November and the Toronto & East York Community Council on 10 November. The Report is at http://www.slna.ca/slna-HCD.html

The Plan was approved by the Toronto Preservation Board on 5th November and by the Toronto & East York Community Council yesterday. At TEYCC an amendment was also passed instructing the City to work on conducting the Plan study for the "St Lawrence Residential District". This is the area (mostly) south of The Esplanade that formed part of the Study area but is not covered by the current Plan. The Study recommended the creation of TWO HCDs; the St Lawrence Historic District is the first and will be up for approval by Council in December.
 
In conjunction with the recent tender for "heritage lighting' of the Market this looks quite exciting.

Description:
St. Lawrence South Market Lower Level Retail Design
PURPOSE

The City of Toronto Real Estate Services Division is seeking professional services to prepare a design and a tender ready package for the design of the lower level retail area of the St. Lawrence South Market. This project includes the internal lower level retail areas, new retail areas under the exterior elevated pedestrian walkway on Market Street, and temporary retail uses for the area under the elevated pedestrian walkway on Jarvis Street. The successful proponent will be a firm or consortium led by an architect and retail expert with necessary support of engineers, heritage specialists and financial experts.

The entire lower level retail area should be a destination in its own right that attracts people to visit the market, shop, dine, linger, and return in the future. A key to the success of this vision is to take advantage of the recent Market Street revitalization (between The Esplanade and Front Street). The areas under the elevated walkways will be designed to accommodate new retail areas that engage both the interior and exterior of the market.

The vendor will be required to provide a design that will build on the success and international reputation of the market to maximize the revenue spaces in the lower level retail area and expanded areas under the elevated walkways. The design will improve the circulation of customers and goods to create an attractive and engaging retail destination that improves the market experience for both customers and retailers. This RFP also includes the development of design solutions for space efficient “back-of-house” areas in the lower level including, but not limited to cold storage, dry storage, loading and movement of goods.

Because St. Lawrence Market South is a designated heritage property, changes to it will have to be designed in accordance with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada.
