Roads: Highway 401 Widening - Highway 8 to Highway 410 (MTO, U/C, Planned)

Heading to the US over a week ago, took a closer look at some of the work being done for widening 401

There are new collector lanes bridges built east of James Snow Parkway for an underpass and being use by traffic as the old bridge gets rebuilt as a new express lane bridge. The new bridges will be 12 lanes wide once done.

As you go around the curve west of hwy 25, traffic is using the new collector lane while the original bridge is being rebuilt as an express land bridge. Looks to be 10 lanes wide.

At CP Guelph Line bridge, collector lanes bridge being use while the original bridge is being built for express lanes by the looks or being 8 lanes.

Grading well underway for the new on ramp for hwy 8 into the new collector lanes and could be open by the end of the year. Work is still taking place for building the new express lanes bridges. The off ramp for eastbound hwy 24 is about 90% complete. Looks like a lot of work for the westbound off ramp to hwy 8.

Finally got around to shooting the section between Hurontario and the Credit River. The eastbound lanes are more advance than the westbound with the eastbound doing some swings.

They are building a bridge over a creek for the westbound lane with the east already done and never knew it exist considering I being driving over it all my life.

All the pier supports are build and waiting to be cap for the bridge itself for Second Line.

Will try to get a video when I leave town on Sat.

More shot up on site and have to re-shoot some shots, as I am not happy with them.

Thanks for the pics. I drive the portion from Mavis to 410 daily and it's interesting to see it from a different perspective.
 
I think they should have built the bridge just as it was proposed. Traffic is brutal in this area due to the hill climb and drivers going way too slow.
 
Heading home on Tuesday, noticed 401 & 25 is being close this weekend.

Starting at 7 pm Sat until 1 pm Sunday, 401 is close 100% in both direction for the removal of the existing bridge. # 25 Traffic was using the new bridge.

Paving taking place for the new on ramp for #8 eastbound lanes.

Paving has been place to shift the eastbound lanes to the new collector lanes west of Mavis as well the off ramp for Mavis being pave. Got off at Mavis and no idea what the lanes look like to the east, other they were almost ready for use when I saw them. Retaining wall being built on the north side with work being done for the Mavis On Ramp going west.

I would say off hand, the 4 current new bridges been built for the widening of the 401 will be completed early spring with a few more bridges starting in 2018.

Ontario Widening Highway 401 in Mississauga and Milton
March 7, 2018

Province Creating Jobs and Keeping People and Goods Moving Through the GTA
Ontario is widening 18km of Highway 401 in Mississauga and Milton, to improve traffic flow and keep people and goods moving.

Kathryn McGarry, Minister of Transportation and Indira Naidoo-Harris, MPP for Halton, were in Mississauga to announce that the province has issued a request for proposals to design and build the highway.

The project will widen 18 kilometres of highway, from the Credit River in Mississauga to Regional Road 25 in Milton. Widening the highway will relieve congestion, allow for more efficient transportation and flow of goods, and help accommodate continued population and employment growth in the region.

Building new highways to get traffic moving is part of Ontario's plan to create fairness and opportunity during this period of rapid economic change. The plan includes a higher minimum wage and better working conditions, free tuition for hundreds of thousands of students, easier access to affordable child care, and free prescription drugs for everyone under 25 through the biggest expansion of medicare in a generation.


QUICK FACTS
  • The project is being delivered under Infrastructure Ontario's Alternative Financing and Procurement model, which transfers risks associated with design, construction and financing of the project to the private sector.
  • Prequalified teams are able to submit their proposal to design, build and finance the Highway 401 Expansion project, with the successful bidder expected to be announced in 2019. The prequalified groups are: - Blackbird Infrastructure Group, including Dufferin Construction Company, Ferrovial Agroman Canada Inc., Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd. and TD Securities - LINK401, including Dragados Canada Inc., Brennan Infrastructures Inc., Bot Infrastructure Ltd., WSP Canada Group Limited, ACS Infrastructure Canada Inc. and Stonebridge Financial Corporation - West Corridor Constructors, including Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc., Amico Design Build Inc., Parsons Inc. and National Bank Financial Inc.
  • The average daily traffic for Highway 401 in the Peel and Halton region is approximately 118,000 to 175,000 vehicles per day.
  • In 2017/18, Ontario is committing more than $2.5 billion to repair and expand provincial highways and bridges across the province.
 
So this is really starting to come together

-Highway 8 to Townline Road: 8+2HOV lanes
-Highway 6 concurrency: 10+2HOV lanes
-Regional Road 25 to Credit River: ? lanes (guessing 10+2 collector/express except under 407ETR that will be 8+2HOV)
-Credit River to Hurontario Street: 10+2HOV collector/express
-Hurontario Street to 410: 12+2HOV collector/express

Still a few gaps to be filled, but those can come later once all these projects are completed. That will make one long carpool lane!

Add in HSR service and the Highway 7 freeway and you've got quite a commitment to link K/W/C with Greater Toronto.
 
Hurontario to the 410 is only 10+2, no? It's operating as 10 right now, and the HOVs will open when the next part to the credit river finishes from my understanding.

The next gaps to be filled are the biggest ones. Arguably this widening is the most complicated as it is Collector+Express, but bridging the gap between Milton and Highway 6 is over 20km.
