Nobody even tries to make valid arguments anymore. The defence of the Scarborough subway gets more preposterous with each passing day.

... and made his reputation there as a socially conservative pain in the ass. Justin clearly encouraged him not to run again. Why, oh why, do Toronto folk then elect these people as Councillors (or vice versa, Raymond Cho comes to mind!)

Fortunately, most of the socially conservative east end Chretien backbenchers have moved on from the HoC - Jimmy K, Tom Wappel, Dennis Mills, John Cannis, Dan McTeague. Only John McKay remains.

Toronto Councillor Justin Di Ciano has put his money where his mouth is and made an appeal to the City Clerk’s office to reject any plans to redraw ward boundaries in the city.

The Ward 5 (Etobicoke-Lakeshore) representative said he personally paid the $300 fee to appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board because he feels so strongly that Toronto doesn’t need more politicians, as recent civic consultant reports have recommended.

Q: Why the opposition?

Di Ciano: “It’s simple. We don’t need more politicians, we need more accountability. Politicians shouldn’t be deciding ward boundaries. When you look at the ward, they are more political lines than they are there for the service of the constituents.”

Q: Is there the support to stop any changes to ward boundaries.

A; “I have been on the budget committee for three years and can’t get answers (for a change). Some councillors have told me they would join me at the OMB to stop this and I know I have a lot of support from the public.”

Q; It Toronto’s civic government bloated.

A: “In New York City there are just over 50 councillors and they represent about 150,000 constituents each. Toronto councillors (44) represent just over 60,000 constituents. I have one of the biggest wards and (potentially) it could be broken into three. This effort is rigged to bring in more politicians rather than represent voters properly. Give me more resources and I’ll deal with more constituents.”

Q: What is the time line.

A: “The OMB should speed this one up because if there is a decision before Dec. 31 we would have enough time before the next election to bring council down to 26 politicians.”

Q: What was the problem with the process of potential ward changes.

A: “There was insufficient public and voter input into background studies (with two rounds of consultations and less than 1,000 people involved). This is insufficient voter impact to the process given the extent of the significant changes proposed across a city of over 2.6 million. Quite frankly, voters are not aware of the changes being proposed.”

Update: council voted to repeal the ban on those dog collars and asked city staff to consult the public on their use. They will report back in September to the licensing committee.

Also something is definitely up with Di Ciano- opposing both ward boundary changes and ranked ballots.
 
It feels like Scarborough councillors choose to ignore facts in their self-interest, but Etobicoke councillors seem to purposely go out of their way to spite the city and stop progress- see Grimes, Ford (old one), Crisanti, Holyday, Di Ciano.
 
At least the Scarborough and Etobicoke clown troops are capable of coordinated - if usually evil - action. But nobody combines insanity and ineffectiveness better than Mammoliti.
 
I think Etobicoke/York is the worst.

I feel very sorry for Sarah Doucette, the sharp High Park/Bloor West councillor, who despite having most of her ward in the old city limits, sits on the Etobicoke and York community council.

Probably a lot of 9-1 votes in that council chamber.

I wonder if this was some quid pro quo with John Tory supporting Justin Di Dunpar's bid for townhouses next to the GO Willowbrook Yard. Tory is well served by the status quo - gross underrepresentation downtown and useful idiots as allies in Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough.
