Ridiculous comments and claims made by City Councillors

In addition to that ^, today was a real doozy for our elected representatives at committees.

Mammoliti: Highways should never close for events if tolls implemented

If tolls are implemented on the Gardiner and DVP, a Toronto councillor is arguing that events that close down the highways should no longer be allowed.

On one Sunday every year, 21,000 cyclists and runners take over the two highways.

The public works committee voted Wednesday in favour of allowing the Ride for Heart to close down the highways on the first Sunday of June both this year, and next.

But councillor Giorgio Mammoliti says if council goes ahead with tolls, drivers should be the only ones allowed to use the roadways.

Ride for Heart pays a permit fee of just under $25,000 to pay for the cost of the closure, the city staffing needed for the day and any cleanup.

Mammoliti, though, says cyclists and runners wouldn't be the ones who pay for highway maintenance day after day.

The committee voted in favour of asking staff to report back on what the city should do about events like Ride for Heart if tolls are implemented.

Wonder how Mammoliti would react to the New York City Marathon?

They close the Verrazano Narrows Bridge during that Marathon. The toll on that bridge (inbound to Staten Island, see link) is $16.00 (in U.S. dollars).

I can't believe I'm forced to side with Mammoliti on this issue, thanks to John Tory. Look at what he tweeted out:
  • There is no reason to support the privatization of garbage in Scarborough. Report is clear that there will be no savings. 1/7
  • Monopolizing a city service eliminates competition, which will lead to higher prices. There is no expected cost savings. 2/7
  • True accountability & value for money are best achieved through mix of private and public collection. 2015 staff report and E&Y confirm. 3/7
  • Mix of service provision creates competitive environment and HAS encouraged productivity by Scarborough's garbage workers. 4/7
  • Currently, district 4's (Scarborough) cost per household came in lower than privatized service in Districts 1 and 2 (west of Yonge). 5/7
  • Ernst & Young also found that between 2017 and 2023, privatizing garbage collection in Scarborough would cost taxpayers $22 million. 6/7
  • If JohnTory and PWIC really believe in savings and efficiencies, we should not be privatizing Scarborough. 7/7

That would be fine if Mammo were just an ordinary private citizen whose public presence was limited to internet trolling or ranting at passersby on street corners. But this moron has a vote and a voice on a $11 billion municipal budget, and his toxic polarization of the city into an angry, uninformed suburban majority who have it in for residents of the core is helping to destroy any hope we have of sane transport planning. Mammo has no sense of being part of a city wider than his (underpopulated) Ward, and no concern for data, analysis or expert opinion. Given the advantages of incumbency, he keeps getting elected by voters who either aren't paying attention or are as deluded as he is. So all the rest of us can do is laugh as time after time he tries to do real harm to all of us.

I doubt he is trying. It is inadvertent by an oblivious man. I am not making excuses. Being oblivious as a leader is a terrible failure.
