Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

"I wonder if those are the same cannons out front?????"
Koolgreen.

With the scarcity of cannon, I would think that Jeffery Dorfman wouldn't have had it any other way.

Not only that, and contrary to popular belief, they are the only totally original items from the club's exterior and and also it's interior.

"In 1900, the Institute acquired its famous landmarks, the two bronze 9-pounder smooth-bore field guns which stand outside our front door to this day. A gift from Minister of Militia, the Right Honourable Frederick Borden, the cannon were cast in Woolwich, England in 1813 and 1815. The original wood carriages rotted between 1905 and 1910. Replacement carriages were periodically repaired: the last major repair was in 1989-1990. In 1996, the Museum Committee purchased two cast aluminum (field gray painted) carriages to modernize and economize: no more concerns about wood rot."

Ah, another of those slant-mouth Donny Donlands signs--by that time more of a "ghost sign". (And as I've suggested before, the way he's drawn inadvertently conveys more of a "This milk is sour!" message.)

my attempts to google this place got me as far as "Auberge Montreaux" but that apparently was ~1986

does anyone remember the ~1979 "then" restaurant for this "now" picture at 1315 Bay St?
