Fish & Chips!

I don't eat fish and chips too often, but I did grow up eating from Harbord Fish and Chips often. Yum! http://www.blogto.com/restaurants/harbordfishandchips

that place used to be a staple for me when I went to UofT.
unfortunately the fish portions are getting thinner and smaller, while getting more $$$.
it's probably $15 for basic fish (1 piece) and chips (portions getting smaller too)

Can personally vouch for Olde York and High Street (although enjoy High Street more). Have heard good things about The Bristol Yard (on Christie) and the Happy Hooker (Dundas St W near Trinity Bellwoods). There's also a spot on Harbord (Harbord Fish and Chips?) which looks like a hole but has been feeding UofTers forever.

I love the cajun batter they offer at Off the Hook plus the great variety of dipping sauces. It's basically ruined every other fish and chips place for me.

I go past Off the Hook all time but have never gone in. Thanks for the info.

Here's their menu. http://www.offthehookfishandchips.com/ $13 for a single serving of hallibut and chips with some 'slaw is ridiculous. However, Olde York Fish and Chips is $15 http://www.oldeyorkefishandchips.com/menus/dinner-1/

Duckworth's hallibut and chips is only $10.95, and I can attest that it's good food.

Higland hallibut and chips is only $10 http://www.phenu.com/HighlandFishandChips

Which is the best oil/shortening/lard to cook fish and/or chips (AKA french fries) in?

We use Avocado oil. It has the highest smoke point of any oil at 520 F. It's also an excellent oil for making salad dressings. Costco sells it in big bottles at a reasonable price.

As for fish and chips. I like the Olde Yorke on Laird. Never been to High Street but I hear it's good. Went to Off The Hook Gourmet Fish & Chips at Broadview/Danforth and it was the greasiest meal I've ever had. I actually felt nauseous afterward. Not sure if all their food is like that all the time, but it sure was bad when I went.
