Its been mentioned elsewhere that they are just building a trench through weston, just decked over somehow, therefore it's called a tunnel. I think the recent proposal is a good plan so far, it seems to take into account all the uses for this corridor, instead of just the old blue 22 scheme.

This time they better make it easy to expand the Weston corridor to 4 or 5 tracks, AND to allow for easy electrification of the system. It's called long term planning.

Can someone please explain to me why we're simply extending the GO Train from Malton to the airport? The Malton GO Train station is less than 2,000 meters from Pearson Airport's Terminal One.

It will be built (as I read it) as a 4 track corridor (it is already 2 tracks south of the Junction, and 1 track north). The grade separation at the Junction is being built for four tracks.

Unless GO gets DMU's, the area for it at the airport will not support current fleet weight.

If the rollercoaster was replace with a true LRT/monorail that can run from the Woodbine to Eglinton, then there is no need to run GO into the airport.

The rollercoaster cannot be expanded without increasing the headway and how much is too much before it's out dated.

Surely that's easily fixed by building the rail beds to support the weight? If they can handle aircraft, they can handle trains.

What drum118 is referring to is the concrete columns that support the current people mover at T1 have cross members that are designed to support the future rail bed of the Airport Rail Link trains.

This design allows for a platform to platform connection between Airport Rail Link & People Mover. These cross members cannot support existing GO Train rolling stock.

Why not then extend the people mover another 2,000 meters to the Malton GO train station? Then GO could adjust the train runs accordingly. It just seems to be a simple solution, as you've already got rail from Union and the GTA right up to the airport's doorstep. Why not make better use of that instead of building an entirely separate rail system?

It's not really that simple. The people mover is a cable-driven system which only allows one train on each track. If you extend the line then you'll increase frequencies. The line was designed to be modification-friendly (to SkyTrain, for example), but those modifications would actually have to be made to make this a viable solution if frequent service is important.

2 km? That's would much more than double the existing length. The system just isn't built for that distance; and the frequency would plummet - particularily when only one train is in service.

It would be a completely new people mover; in which case you might as well build it into a separate platform in T1.

Not only should the people mover be extened to serve Westwood Mall, it should be extended to south to Renforth to connect with the Missisauga Transitway and Eglinton LRT and the dozen or so bus MT and TTC bus routes that already serve the area. If the technology does not allow this, then they chose the wrong technology.

The people-mover was designed to simply move people from T1 to T3, and the reduced rate parking, so they could eliminate the shuttle bus service. Then they did something novel in Toronto - they quickly went out exactly what they said they would build, and they built it, and got it operating in 2-3 years. Since day 1, GTAA has compared it to an elevator between the terminals.

It works exactly as designed (even if a bit bumpy), and does it's job.

If you go back to the older GTAA documents that no longer seem to be on their website, they always talked about a second heavy-duty people-mover to serve T1 and Renforth, and further East from Viscount.

The technology doesn't allow this immediately, but it was made so that it can be retrofitted into regular LRT fairly easily. So, an extension is very viable. I think there should be a big gateway hub at Eglinton, where the Mississauga Transitway would meet with the Eglinton LRT, and the bunch of bus routes.

A better idea might be to use the finch west LRT as a shuttle between the go train, (possibly at woodbine) and the terminal, there is already plans to bring the finch and eglinton LRT's into Pearson.
