Rob Ford's Toronto

Bringing large amounts of food to eat in a cemetery is not unique to Western culture.

York Cemetery (which has a few sections devoted to Chinese people) during the Tomb Sweeping Festival has many Chinese families visiting their loved ones by sweeping their graves (hence the name), worshipping them, and offer them food, beverages, and lit incense sticks for prayer. Some see this as having picnic with one's ancestors! Paper money (the joss variety as shown below, not the legal tender variety or the Monopoly money variety) is usually burned during the festival to wish for good fortune.

Note that my parents practise this custom, while I stopped doing so (because my life is busy and I am a secular atheist) and yes, it is important to respect one's ancestors by visiting them. I find this an interesting aspect of Chinese tradition brought overseas, though there is often a very large mess of ashes from burnt joss money around people's graves soon after the festival, as well as seagulls eating whatever food was "sacrificed."

1) What bigot would have 3 Councillors of visible minority (Thompson, Minnan-Wong and Palacio) in his circle?
2) What bigot would welcome 'everyone' to his house for a BBQ?
3) What bigot would have 'anyone' work on their election campaign?
4) What bigot would have a press secretary that is a visible minority?
I don't know why we need to debate this again.

Few have suggested that Ford's bigotry is based on race or ethnicity. His bigotry is his obstinacy ... and in particular his anti-gay bigotry.

It's pretty simple. Ford has clearly shown his anti-gay positions many times. He is clearly a homophobic bigot. Trying to point out that he doesn't have anything against visible minorities, so he isn't a bigot ignores that there are many types of bigotry. It is, of course, just as evil to be bigoted against gays, as it is to be bigoted against blacks, whites, redheads, women, Christians, Muslims, or other groups.

BTW, there's a particularly blunt editorial in the Globe and Mail this morning, going after Ford's homophobia:

ANTI-HOMOPHOBIA - ROB FORD
Mayor of Some

(the difference in headline is between the printed and electronic version)

Keep in mind his BFF Sue-Ann Levy is openly gay...

In my opinion, on a personal level he can like or dislike any group of people he so chooses. However, these opinions need to be left at the front door and when doing his job, he needs to RESPECT all people. He doesn't have to like someone's skin colour, or agree with what they practice in the bedroom, but as long as he looks past that and treats them with dignity then he can believe anything he wants.

Personally, allowing himself to have a professional and personal relationship with Sue-Ann Levy makes far more of a statement about his feelings about homosexuality than showing up to a parade or letting some inappropriate language does.

Choosing to befriend Sewer Anne Levy implies a lot things, but open-mindedness is certainly not one of them. Sue Anne Levy, gay as she may be, is a bile-filled vitriol spewing redneck.

Levy was very critical of his decision not to attend Pride last year. She noted that he should be mayor of ALL the people in Toronto.

And that's really the point. The bar Ford needs to jump over to assure us he's not a homophobe is incredibly low. All he needs to do is stand with Brian Burke and PFLAG at a flag-raising.

just outside his office btw

RF, like some other homophobic men, have problems with mainly gay men.
the idea of lesbians is jo material for them and perfectly fine since all they need to turn str8 is the right man to f*ck then, which of course, would be them.

That seems odd to me. If it's a philisophical/religion thing that creates hatred, then why would only one gender be an issue?

Is it a fear of temptation or something, the same way some men don't want women around?

Sorry, perhaps it's obvious ... I just can't get my head around it. It's just so bizarre that's this is even an issue these days.

I'd say it's a common thing. Lesbians aren't a "threat" to straight men, and a good man can "fix" them. A gay man is different though -- he might make a pass or something. It's weird and doesn't make sense, but I've met enough men who are comfortable with gay women, but not with gay men. Straight porn often includes female on female action.

I much prefer bisexual girls to straight ones. They share my love for women. What is there not to get?

As I stated in the other thread I think exclusive homosexuality (specially in females) is rather mythical. I could lure many lesbians back into heterosexual fun. I respect a homosexual guy's belief to think he could lure straight guys into being with him, too.

A lesbian who's afraid of guys hitting on her is just as bigoted as a straight guy who is afraid of guys hitting on him.

RC8:

I think you are ignoring the power dynamic between men and women in this assertion. As to the phobia of straight men of gay men - well, there is the whole comparator on the standards of masculinity and all the baggage around that one.

Are you sure that this isn't just you assuming some sort of unfounded right to harass people based on your personal unconfirmed beliefs?

Whoa, RC8, what are you doing to yourself? I can't bear to watch this.
