It's an important topic, but please, don't go too far off topic, if you know what I mean.

Visible minorities hit 5 million

South Asians outnumber Chinese, census finds

OTTAWA – For the first time in Canada's history, visible minorities have surpassed the five million mark as a new wave of immigrants from Asia is changing the face of Canada at a staggering rate, according to new census data released Wednesday by Statistics Canada.

Visible minorities now comprise more than 16 per cent of the total population as their number skyrocketed by 27 per cent between 2001 and 2006, more than five times the previous increase of 5.4 per cent.

The sharp growth in the visible minority population was largely due to the fact that three-quarters of new immigrants to Canada since 2001 were visible minorities, analysts said.

South Asians, those who hail from such countries as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Tamil, now slightly outnumber the Chinese, who were identified as the top visible minority group in 2001, the last time the census was taken.

Nearly 1.3 million people identified themselves as South Asian in the 2006 census – a 38 per cent jump over 2001.

South Asians now account for a quarter of all visible minorities in Canada, or four per cent of the total population. Those with roots in China comprise about another quarter of the country's visible minority population, with some 1.2 million identifying themselves as Chinese.

That marks an 18 per cent increase over 2001 and accounts for 24 per cent of the visible minority population and 3.9 per cent of the total population.

Blacks, Filipinos, Latin Americans, Arabs, Southeast Asians, West Asians, Koreans and Japanese round out the Top 10 visible minority groups – a list that's relatively unchanged since 2001.

Should current immigration trends continue, Statistics Canada predicts one in five Canadians will be a visible minority by 2017, when the country turns 150 years old.

Tamil is not a country I've ever heard of. Nice journalism.

Also, Toronto's population is 2,476,565 now? That's even lower than the 2001 census figure, let alone 2006. We're dropping like flies!

Face of Canada? Rubbish. In the Maritimes this is not the case. In much of the Praries this is not the case. In the North this is not the case. Even in Ontario, once you're out of the GTA or Ottawa this is hardly the case, with exceptions such as KW notwithstanding.

As an immigrant myself, I say the more the merrier, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking that immigration is changing the face of Canada when the vast majority of those that come settle in the GTA, Vancouver or Montreal.

^Isn't this region part of Canada?

Combined, Atlantic Canada has a population less than that of Toronto. Vancouver, the GTA and Montreal easily represent about a third of the national population, so what happens in those three regions matters. And they are part of Canada.

And of course exceptions such as Edmonton and Calgary in the Prairies.

These, along with Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener, Oshawa, Montreal, Vancouver, Abbotsford, and Ottawa, comprise the majority of Canada's population and all major destinations for new immigrants.

That'll probably remain the case unless the government comes up with "incentives" to "relocate" immigrants to slower-growing areas in Canada.

strange how they divide groups. some they count by skin color, others by country of origin & others by geographic area of origin.

that is true, I have been to Midtown Toronto today and the place was very white even in area of new development.

Anyone notice how much development has gone on Yonge from College to Steeles!!

I am surprised by the number of visible minorities for Oakville, which has always been considered so 'white bread'. I guess immigrants that get well-established here tend to appreciate small-town Ontario, even in its chichier incarnations, than those born and raised here?

How does this poll even make sense? They compare South Asian which encompasses a whole lot of ethnicities and languages and cultures, with Chinese...wouldn't it make more sense to compare South Asian with East Asian, counting all Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, etc...?

And we're retaking the downtown cores of the major cities....the newcomers can have Brampton, Markham, etc...

Didn't you just say you were an immigrant yourself a few posts ago?

What's with this race to "take" places? Is there some rule I haven't heard about that ethnic groups have to own certain regions?

The most interesting thing is that in 5 years, Milton's share went from, what was it, below 4% to 17%.

That's new-model 905 suburbia for you. (Probably explains Oakville as well; closer to Hwy 7 you get, the more tinted it gets...)
