Note the "modern" street lighting on Front in the 1955 and 1958 photos (what kind would that have been?)

The postcard view labelled "1940:" also must be from 1955 at least as it has the "modern" lighting and the road looks freshly repaved after the subway construction.
I don't know about the lighting itself, but the fixtures look similar to the ones used on the Gardiner originally. These lights were also used on Carlton between Yonge and Church I think.

I think you're right, Albert, and I've revised accordingly. The postcard is sometime between the completion of the subway and the building going "white" (reminds me of when the old dark Eaton's store went "white" prior to its demolition).

The street lights in the second last photo are the same ones that were used on the DVP until the mid 90s or so, no?

That postcard may be dated 1973, but the photo isn't--otherwise, you'd be seeing TD peekong off to the right, etc.
I think the photo's more likely c1960, when the addition was new and unbegrimed, and the Royal York hadn't sported its rooftop sign yet...

I agree, the Carlton lights look very much like the original Gardiner and DVP fixtures, more than the Front St. lights. Now we just need to figure out when these were installed and when they were removed. I'm pretty sure they were gone by 1990.
They were already there by September 1964, as seen in this Telegram photo of Beatlemania on Carlton St.

Question would be when the building on the NW corner of Front and York (the W.R. Johnson Building, shown here in 1929) was demolished:

It was likely demolished for the University Avenue extension down to meet York St at the south side of Front. Was that around 1960-61? Was it built in conjunction with the one-way scheme on Wellington, Richmond and Adelaide?
