most of this is still here. the entire block was used as an ancillary to St. Lawrence market from the looks of it.

fronteast.jpg

Further west. some grand Victorians still standing...

frontst.jpg

But some were torn down for the St. Lawrence Centre

fronteast2.jpg

Still there--stripped of grimy mien

frontyonge.jpg

Still there. actually looks better now!

kingeast.jpg

Thank god this is still standing. Saphire Tavern (sic) looks like it would have been a cool place...

Mies Rising!

i can't place the location of most of these. some are very familiar looking but i don't know exactly where they were (are)....

I think this might be King St...

Richmond at Victoria?
richmondst3.jpg

Barclay Hotel. No idea where this was.
barclay.jpg

Adelaide at George? that old post office building...
adelaide.jpg

East of Yonge looked desperately slummy back then. What probably saved a lot of our heritage buildings was that its neighbourhoods had fallen so far that developers of the era ignored that side of town.

Richmond at Victoria?
richmondst3.jpg

Google shows the Tivoli (formally the Allen) at 13 Richmond Street E. between Yonge & Victoria, south side.

Toronto Dominion Bank. Southwest corner of King and Bay

kingbay2.jpg

Must be one of the earliest "symbolic" No Left Turn signs in Toronto.

Bemelmans was *Zumburger*. Gag.
Notice the theatre dt_toronto_geek identified.

I think this might be King St...[/B]

quebecbank.jpg

Yup, torn down for Commerce Court (and it's in Bill Dendy's Lost Toronto)

Adelaide at George? that old post office building...

Absolutely.

somewhere around King and University?

kinguniversity.jpg

metropole2.jpg

Yup, on the site of 145 King.

Still exists, NW cor King + Toronto.

The old Telegram building, SE cor Bay & Melinda.

??...looks like King Edward in background?

unknown14.jpg
E side Scott, btw/Front + Wellington? And...

this (on Wellington) can be seen in the background.

NW cor King + Jarvis. (Forgot what it was, but I think remnants are at Guild Inn.)

[Edit: Church, not Jarvis. We all make boo-boos.]

N side Melinda, E of Bay.

King + George, and still around?

King + Church, SE corner? (The Tippet-Richardson T-R in the background's what I'm going by; cf. the Front + Market shot.)

Boy, the NE cor of Front + Jarvis looked unprepossessing once.

NE corner Adelaide + York.

N side Melinda on site of Commerce Court--and a great bonus glimpse of Mies' TD bank pavilion under construction.

What I haven't mentioned/identified, I can't place--at least momentarily...

Okay, that makes sense now. I know the buildings on the right seemed familiar...

Toronto had this really cool no-nonsense blue collar look to it back then, perhaps even more so than other American cities I've seen from the time. It looks like they'd throw you out of the bar for being a pansy if you would order anything above Stock Ale.

There's the Broadway Theatre on the far right

Queen looking west at Bay

And the University Theatre on the far right again

Old theatres and cinemas are like cathedrals to me, I find them magical. When I travel, I check out the theatres first, and then the rest of the city.

Sorry to always point them out and rant on about them but I get so excited when I see old photos of them that I haven't seen before.

I'm loving these threads!
