A Zen-inspired Toronto hotel has cracked the top ten in a list of best new places to stay worldwide.

The Cosmopolitan Toronto Hotel, situated on Colborne St. just east of Yonge St., earned the distinction of being the only Canadian spot on Conde Nast Traveller’s 2006 Hot List out of the 60 hotels listed.

Sitting at number ten on the list, it was also just one of five North American hotels on the list.

The 97-room hotel is described by the magazine as straightforward and stylish.

Hotel owner Gil Blutrich is a Zen enthusiast, and designed the interior spaces with the aid of an "energy balancing expert." The bedrooms all contain yoga mats and are praised as "extremely comfortable and chic."

"A hotel stay can no longer be standard, but must offer more than even just great amenities; it must be an extension of what you love about your home and your lifestyle," said Blutrich. "We try to emulate this so our guests truly feel like they have a safe and comfortable haven as well as the style elements that are reflective of their lifestyle."

The hotel was also cited for its hardwood floors and nearly wall-to-wall windows offering views of Lake Ontario and the CN Tower.

There are only five suites per floor, each offering air purifiers, balconies, full kitchens, and laundry facilities. The sheets are 400 thread-count Egyptian linens, and there’s a 32†LCD flat screen TV and wireless Internet connection in each suite.

The Cosmopolitan Toronto opened nearly a year ago, on June 8th, 2005. It’s owned by Skyline International, a Toronto-based real estate development and investment company.

Is this the same list that the Soho Metropolitan was on last year?

I thought it was the Le Germain that had made that list?

It looks like a top 20 new hotels list. Perhaps it is a list you can only be on once after which point the hotel is no longer new.

Looks like it. Also, it's not necessarily #10 on the list. I think it's that the list is alphabetical.

Colbourne Street. One block south of King, east off Yonge.

I thought that was a condo. What's so great about it?

The bar and restaurant are cool. That's all I've seen. And the usual pretty staff as in all of those hip hotels.

All you'll need to bring is your toothbrush to move into a suite at the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Residences.

Eighty fully furnished condos are being offered for sale by Skyline Properties at the boutique hotel at 8 Colborne St., just south of Yonge and King. And they come equipped with 400-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, place settings for four and personalized bathrobes.

Buyers will be able to access the hotel's services on a pay-as-you-go basis, including housekeeping, valet parking, 24-hour concierge, the Eight Wine Bar and Restaurant, and the Zen-inspired Shizen Spa. The Cosmopolitan was listed among the hottest new hotels in the world by Condé Nast Traveller in 2006.

"It's a very intimate, small hotel residence," says Barbara Lawlor of Baker Real Estate. "It's very New York, except it's in downtown Toronto, for far less money."

There are five different suite styles to choose from, ranging from 400 to 550 square feet, priced from $220,000 to $380,000. Thirty to 90-day closings are available.

That's a fabulous price point for a condo just steps away from the Yonge-King subway," says Lawlor. "These would be fabulous for first-time buyers, for investors, for professional people looking for a pied-à-terre in the city or parents needing accommodation for university students."

Lawlor says the Cosmopolitan will continue to operate as a hotel with guest suites on the lower floors. Condo owners can live in their suites full-time or rent them out as they wish.

The building has only five suites per floor and 92 in all (including the hotel suites). The Cosmopolitan was designed to create a Zen-like atmosphere, with the input of energy and balancing expert Sylvia Noble. Each suite includes a full kitchen, washer and dryer, air purifier, floor-to-ceiling windows (offering views of the lake and city), balcony, engineered flooring, an orthopedic bed, meditation pillow, relaxation CDs and books. Suites also include furniture, appliances, an LCD flat-screen TV and wireless Internet.

The building has low-light elevators, an enhanced ventilation system and a sculpted stone and bamboo fountain.

The fitness centre is open 24 hours, seven days a week and the five-star Shizen Spa offers holistic beauty and wellness treatments; owners can arrange for treatments in their suites. On the fourth floor, the solarium area features a sunken hot tub and waterfall. Residents who request turn-down service will find energy stones left on their pillows, and they can tune into a 24-hour meditation channel.

A business centre is equipped with high-performance technology and the Eight Wine Bar and Restaurant specializes in market-fresh comfort food and a wine list that includes boutique and rare varietals and classics, along with cult and cutting-edge wines.

Condo buyers will receive a Platinum VIP pass to Skyline Properties' Pantages Hotel Toronto Centre and the Inn at Horseshoe, which offers skiing and golf getaways.

The Cosmopolitan is set on a tranquil street in the heart of the financial, entertainment and shopping districts, steps from Eaton Centre.

Sales for those who have pre-registered begin Dec. 5. Register by calling 416-923-1839 or click on www.cosmopolitanresidences.ca

I thought that was a condo. What's so great about it?

Not a hell of a lot actually. A very garish sign on dreary looking building that holds promise for being a distant future flophouse/hotel just off of Yonge on a dark bleak portion of Colburn that otherwise is a pretty neat little street.

That list is in alphabetical order...I've been in the Cosmo, it didn't look that impressive...Maybe the grass just seems greener in other countries :D
