John Tory says we need subways to Pickering

Perhaps he is just showing how much of a forward planner he is....probably reached the conclusion that our best chance to get a subway to Pearson was before we built Pearson...so in advance of the Pickering Airport...he wants to build a subway.....;) ;) ;) ;)

As was said in another thread, we're just all waiting for his "publicly-funded religious schools" moment of this campaign. That is, the moment he Tories himself.

Maybe he was being sarcastic, saying that if it wasn't for all the "lack of decision making", we would have had subways to Pickering by now. Otherwise, he's a bloody idiot.

It's only a matter of time. We've seen him and his campaign staff fumble the transit file file since the introduction of SmartTrack.

Tory's fall can't come quickly enough. Too many people see him as a serious alternative to Ford - not enough realize how stupid he really can be, and as Mayor, would be.

Also Pickering is technically scheduled to get an LRT...eventually...in the form of the upgrading of the DRT Pulse BRT from dedicated lanes to light rail.

Pickering would be good for Tory's Smart Track scheme using the Lakeshore corridor, but for some reason he is so fixated on using only two GO lines while forcing the city to pay billions for it, even though the liberals promised to do the same thing to all GO corridors with funding that's already been approved in the budget (i.e revenue tools).

Isn't his Smart Track Plan a subway to Markham? Make up your mind about which people who can't vote for you that you're hoping to serve.

Of course Pickering and Lakeshore East will be getting GO RER, along with all of the GO corridors. Tory is so out to lunch with SmartTrack. It's basically just taking credit for a provincial plan.

Well using his Smartrax system a subway style system to Pickering is very doable.

As outrageous as it may sound getting a subway/grade separated rail, he is absolutely right. The reality is that forward and progressive cities would already have such a system. Toronto's subway system is so incredibly small that a tiny 8km extension to Vaughn is considered a monumental achievement. Coquitlam is roughly the same distance to Vancouver as Pickering to Toronto and it's Metro system is already well under construction. Vancouver already has a system the size of Toronto's with another 11km well under construction. Vancouver is about a third the size of Toronto with lower ridership levels and a far more difficult topography.

I think the problem is that after years of complete inertia and incompetence at the TTC/Metrolinx/City Hall, Torontonians are use to get nearly nothing and kind of substantial subway expansion is written off as fantasy. A pretty pathetic state of affairs.
