Hi, does anyone know what is planned for this site? Apparently 50% of the property was recently acquired by Calloway REIT..so it is likely some kind of shopping centre?

Massive retail development and hotel planned for old Toronto Film Studios site

Posted by Chris Bateman / MAY 14, 2013

The former Toronto Film Studios land on Eastern Avenue is ready for its next scene. A major new plan to redevelop the partially disused lands north of Lake Shore, unveiled today, envisions a sweeping new mixed-use development and a revitalized "hub of digital enterprise" on the existing 19.5-acre Revival 629 lot.

The renderings, which developers stress are preliminary, call for a total of 10 new low-rise buildings that will house new retail outlets, offices, a public plaza, and a hotel. There won't be any residential units, though. The Ontario Ministry of the Environment has deemed the brownfields site unsuitable for homes and condos.

A bit strange. You can't live there but evidently you can work there... even though many shooting days go to ten hours and more and art departments, among others like hair and makeup, typically do 11 to 13 hours a day on site. Hmmmm.

The soil remediation issues should be more aggressive. That way perhaps residential could be thrown into the mix. I have other reservations I'll get into later. On the other hand, it's great to see something move forward after the first Walmart debacle and then the odious G-20 holding pen phase. I also think the scale and density is in line with the neighbourhood.

As you'll see at the top of the page, there's now a dataBase page for this project (and it just happens to be our 500th!)

Like! Quite industrial looking in terms of texture, which would fit right in to the area. I find it a bit too modest in terms of the degree of intensification however.

You can find them and more in the database for it http://urbantoronto.ca/database/projects/studiocentre

Here are some. Looks really good.

Looks pretty nice; I like that bronze glazing. The 4th rendering reminds me of the Parliament St. data centre. Lastly, is that a waterwall in the 2nd last rendering?

Pretty cool. Huge game changer for Eastern Avenue. Be interesting to see how well film and tv facilities cope with all of the construction. I can see how "quiet on set!" while shooting will become problematic. But they'll deal. Maybe work will shift to other local production facilities during construction phase.

You would be correct - that's what is shown on the landscape plan on the development website
